What we designed and built
The client needed a movable space for the temporary storage of materials classified as hazardous. The solution had to provide sufficient ventilation, contain possible leaks and accommodate electrical equipment suitable for an environment where an explosive atmosphere could occur.
A new dark grey 20ft CSC spill-containment container in RAL 7016 was selected as the base. Its weather-resistant Corten steel structure provides a robust enclosure for outdoor use and allows the storage unit to be moved when operational requirements change.
Spill containment and floor structure
An integrated sump beneath the floor can hold approximately 1,250 litres of liquid. This helps prevent possible container leaks from being absorbed into the surrounding ground.
A removable galvanized steel grating was installed above the sump using bolted connections. The floor structure was designed to withstand forklift traffic, allowing materials to be moved directly into and out of the container.
Fire protection, ventilation and ATEX equipment
The container was insulated with EI60 fire-rated sandwich panels. Two ventilation valves were added to provide additional airflow for the stored materials.
The electrical system was equipped with components intended for ATEX Zone 2 areas. The main distribution board with residual-current protection was installed outside the container. Inside, the equipment includes an ATEX Zone 2 LED light, heater and thermostat.
Custom-sized steel shelving was also installed to organise the stored materials and make efficient use of the available interior space.
