Frequently asked questions

Things you might want to know about custom containers

What can a custom container be used for?

A custom container can serve as far more than storage or transport equipment. Depending on the project requirements, containers can be converted into technical equipment shelters, energy storage units, battery testing facilities, workshops, control rooms, mobile service centers, fire suppression units, temporary offices, training facilities, retail spaces, or operational support buildings. The starting point is always the intended application and the technical requirements of the operation, not the container itself. This approach allows the solution to be tailored to the equipment, personnel, workflows, and environment it is designed to support.

Can the structure of a shipping container be modified?

Yes. Openings for doors, windows, cable entries, ventilation systems, equipment connections, and access hatches can be integrated into the structure. Entire wall sections can be removed when required, provided that appropriate structural reinforcements are incorporated into the design. Floor structures can also be strengthened to accommodate heavy equipment, machinery, water tanks, battery systems, or concentrated point loads. Structural modifications are engineered according to the intended use and load requirements of the project.

Can you design a container around our operational requirements?

Yes. Every project starts with understanding how the container will be used, what equipment it will house, and what conditions it must operate in. The design process considers factors such as equipment dimensions and weight, power requirements, ventilation, fire protection, access points, insulation, maintenance needs, and transportation requirements.

Rather than adapting your operation to a standard container, we engineer the container around the application. This can include structural modifications, reinforced floors, integrated technical systems, custom layouts, and industry-specific features that support the intended use throughout the container’s lifecycle.

What is the difference between a custom container and a modular building?

A custom container is built around a standard ISO shipping container structure. The steel frame and dimensions remain the foundation of the solution, while the interior, technical systems, openings, insulation, and layout are customized to meet the intended application. Custom containers are often used for technical equipment, workshops, control rooms, storage, energy systems, and mobile facilities.

A modular building is constructed from purpose-built modules designed primarily for human occupancy and larger interior spaces. Unlike containers, modular buildings are not limited by shipping container dimensions and can be combined to create larger offices, welfare facilities, classrooms, accommodation units, and other occupied spaces.

How is the manufacturing location selected?

Manufacturing is selected based on the requirements of the project. Factors such as technical complexity, delivery schedule, production volume, certification requirements, and logistics all influence the decision. Depending on the project, production can take place in Finland or through certified manufacturing partners in China.

The goal is not to fit every project into the same production model, but to select the manufacturing approach that best supports the project’s technical requirements, timeline, and overall cost efficiency.
